It is during the spring season when fresh seeds are introduced into the water. This is one of the most critical phrases of shrimp farming. No matter how good the conditions are or how protein-rich the diet is, it is of no good if the quality of shrimp seeds is not up to the mark. Farmers should look for healthy seeds from renowned hatcheries.
How to Identify Quality Shrimp Seeds?
Selection of quality seeds is the first step of shrimp management. Here we will discuss some of the most important parameters for the selection of right seeds:
a) Size – This is a very important parameter. The ideal size ranges from PL 15-20. It can be indicated by the appearance of 4 to 6 spines on the rostrum.
b) Anatomy – The seeds should have a normal appearance of rostrum, appendages, and trunk. The abdominal muscle should be clearly visible.
c) Colour – The best quality post-larvae will be dark brown, black to light grey in colour. Any signs of discolouration or red colouration can be a sign of any underlying disease.
d) Behaviour – This is a very helpful parameter to identify the healthiest seeds. Healthy seeds are more active. They will swim straight and instantly respond to an external stimulus.
Choosing the right seed is only the half job done. Very often the profitability of a shrimp farm comes down to the stocking density. More often than not, farmers end up stocking more than the optimum level which adversely affects the pond water environment. The stocking density largely depends on the pond size. Other factors such as seasonal variation, water depth, and food availability also determine the stocking density.
For a semi-intensive culture, the stocking density should be between 25 to 40seeds per metre square. This number grows for intensive culture, the range can be between 50 to 100 seeds per metre square.
A Few Words to End With
We have already discussed the quality and density of stocking. The next important part is the quality of feeds. Shrimps are very much dependent on the quality of feed. Shrimps rely on feeds for growth and immunity. It is advised to use high-quality feeds such as Nouriture for quick growth and better immunity.
